Summer Care for Cats

June 16, 2020

Summer is here! Many of our feline patients absolutely love this time of year. After all, Fluffy gets to bask in the sun, hunt moths, and watch birds and squirrels. However, you will want to take a few precautions to keep your pet safe in the heat. A Lapel, IN vet discusses summer care for kitties in this article.

Water

First and foremost, make sure that Fluffy always has fresh water. Some cats actually prefer to drink running water. Try getting your kitty a pet fountain, and see if she likes it. Drop a few ice cubes into your feline pal’s dish on hot days.

Fur Care

Cats are very good about grooming themselves, but they still appreciate a little help in this area. Brushing Fluffy regularly will remove dust and dander from her coat. This will help her stay cool and comfy, and get that motor going.

Keeping Kitty Cool

Speaking of keeping Fluffy cool, make sure that your cute pet always has access to rooms cooled by fans or AC. We actually recommend just keeping your feline buddy inside. This will also keep her safe from cars, weather, predators, and other hazards.

Purrfect Snacks

Everybody loves a cold snack on a hot day. Give your furry pal her own frozen treat! Get a can of tuna in water, and add a bit more water to it. Pour small amounts into an ice-cube tray and freeze. Or, pour some tuna juice over shaved ice. You can also offer your furball a bowl of chilled broth. Or, go all-out and get Fluffy some kitty ice cream.

Parasite Control

Fleas, ticks, and other parasites are a big problem at this time of year. Keep up with Fluffy’s vaccinations and parasite control! Ask your vet for specific recommendations.

Beds

If there’s one thing that all our feline friends appreciate, it’s a comfy bed. Why not make Fluffy a kitty hammock? All you need to do is attach a piece of material to the legs of a table or end table and tell her to stay out of it. She’ll jump right in! You can also point a fan at or above your cat’s regular bed. Just make sure that your frisky furball can’t knock it over.
