Check the Chip Day

August 15, 2020

Check the Chip Day is August 15th. Has your pet been microchipped yet? If not, we strongly recommend getting this done as soon as possible. This quick, one-time procedure is one of the best things you can do to protect your furry friend. A local Anderson, IN vet discusses microchips below.

Why Chips Are Important

Did you know that as many as one in three pets gets lost at some point in their lives? Even the most loving, faithful pet is prone to taking advantage of a door or gate left open. Intact pets also sometimes run off looking for love, while other animals may bolt if startled. If your furry pal ever goes missing, that tiny microchip will greatly increase the odds of them coming home again. In fact, that tiny device could one day save your beloved pet’s life!

Checking The Chip

How does one go about checking a chip? One thing you can do at home is to make sure that your information is correct and up-to-date in the chip manufacturer’s database. Try using the AAHA Universal Pet Microchip Lookup tool here to check your records. This is very important, as the chip will essentially be useless if your information missing, outdated, or incomplete. We also recommend having your vet check your pet’s chip during their regular appointments. This is just to ensure that it hasn’t moved or stopped working.

Getting A Chip

If you haven’t had your pet chipped, this is a great reminder to make an appointment. Although this is often done in conjunction with spay/neuter surgery, it can also be scheduled on its own. Your vet will use a hypodermic needle to place the chip beneath your pet’s skin. That’s it! Once the chip is in place, you now have a permanent, invisible link to your furry little friend.

Chips Of The Future

Currently, chips do not contain medical records. They also do not utilize GPS technology. This is mainly because there’s no way to really power a chip. However, you can get GPS-equipped collars. Of course, technology has progressed in leaps and bounds over the past few decades. It will be interesting to see what happens with microchip technology down the road.
