Fall Care for Senior Dogs

October 15, 2020

Autumn is a beautiful time of year here in Indiana. Many of our canine patients love to run and play outside in that crisp fall air. However, if your furry best friend is entering his golden years, he’ll need some extra TLC as the weather gets colder. A local Anderson, IN veterinarian discusses caring for older dogs in cold weather below.

Brushing

Dust, dead fur, and dander can all make your furry buddy’s coat matted and itchy. They’ll also interfere with the insulating properties of his fur. Brushing Fido regularly will remove his old hair, so his coat will be soft and comfortable for winter. Before it gets really cold, give your pooch a bath or take him to the salon.

Beds

Comfy beds are important for any dog, but they’re particularly crucial for older pets. Fido won’t be very comfortable on a thin pad! Beds will also keep him warm once the nights start getting chilly. Orthopedic beds are a great option for senior dogs. Make sure your pooch’s bed isn’t in a drafty spot.

Exercise

Fido may spend a good chunk of his time snoozing once it gets cold, but don’t let him become a complete couch potato. On days when it’s too cold for more than a quick walk, keep your four-legged friend active by playing with him indoors. Just don’t overexert your pup.

Food

Your vet may recommend making a few changes to Fido’s menu as temperatures drop. Your canine friend may also benefit from certain supplements, such as fish oil, which helps lubricate stiff joints.

Bone/Joint Issues

Did you know that as many as 70 percent of older dogs suffer from arthritis? This painful condition can make Fido feel very stiff and sore, especially in cold, damp weather. Keep an eye out for red flags, such as limping and reduced mobility. If you know or suspect that your canine pal has arthritis, ask your vet for treatment options. There are many things that can help decrease your pet’s pain and improve his mobility.

Comfort

Does Fido stay home alone while you go to work? It’s going to start getting dark early, so you may want to leave a light on. That way, your pet isn’t left alone in a dark, quiet house.
