Cold Weather Care for Cats

December 1, 2020

Winter may be a little ways off yet, but at this time of year, temperatures can drop rapidly. You’ll want to take some steps to make sure that your feline pal stays warm and safe as the weather cools. An Anderson, IN vet offers some tips on keeping Fluffy happy, healthy, and purring in cold weather below.

Brushing

Did you know that brushing Fluffy will help her stay warmer? Dead fur and dander all interfere with the insulating properties of your fuzzy pal’s coat. This is also a great way to spend time with your kitty!

Beds

Cats are always on the lookout for warm, comfy napping spots. Make sure that Fluffy has lots of soft beds to rotate through for all of those naps. These don’t have to be fancy: A plush blanket folded up and put into a box will be purrfectly fine.

Safety

We strongly recommend keeping your pet indoors. Cars, weather, and wild animals are always hazardous to kitties. In winter, frigid temperatures, snow, freezing rain, and ice add to those dangers. Autumn has its own set of concerns. Piles of leaves can harbor dangerous mold and bacteria. Snakes and other critters may also be more aggressive than usual, as they are seeking places to hibernate. Chemicals are another issue. Many people treat their yards with fertilizers at this time of year. Antifreeze is also very dangerous. It’s very poisonous to cats, but has a taste many of them like. Fluffy could ingest these chemicals by walking through a patch that was recently treated, and then licking her paws!

Stiffness

Is your feline buddy in her senior years? If so, Fluffy may get stiff and sore on those damp, chilly days. Supplements may help with this. Ask your vet for more information.

Hydration

Make sure that Fluffy’s water bowl isn’t in a drafty area. Many cats don’t care to drink cold water! You may want to get your furry pal a kitty fountain. Some kitties prefer running water.

Comfort

Small touches can really help keep your furry buddy comfortable. If you know you won’t be home before dark, leave a light on for Fluffy, so she isn’t left home alone in a dark house. Leave the climate control on as well.
