Camping With Fido

June 1, 2021

Camping season has officially started! Do you enjoy getting out into nature? Many of our canine friends certainly do! Fido can make a great camping buddy. However, you’ll need to take some precautions to keep him safe. Man’s Best Bud does have a knack for getting into mischief. A local Anderson, IN vet discusses camping with dogs below

Packing

Fido will need some basic doggy essentials. His bag should include food, toys, treats, bedding, a tie line, dishes, a pet first-aid kit, towels, and grooming supplies. If you’ll be near water, bring a pet lifejacket along. Your pooch may be able to carry some of his own things in a backpack.

Preparation

Make sure that your canine pal is microchipped, wearing ID tags, and current on his vaccines and parasite control. We also strongly recommend spaying or neutering your furry pal.

Water

Bring plenty of water along. You and Fido will both need it. Don’t let your pup drink from rivers, lakes, or streams. The water may be contaminated! You may want to bring a filtering device, such as a life straw, with you. These are great to have in emergencies.

Food

Our canine companions can be pretty opportunistic about food. Trash is one concern here. Garbage may contain things like skewers, bones, tin foil, can lids, and fat trimmings, which are all dangerous to dogs. Be sure to secure your trash. This is also important for your own safety. You don’t want to attract bears, wildcats, or other wild animals.

Training

We recommend keeping Fido on a leash at all times. Your furry friend should also obey basic commands, like Sit, Stay, and Come. This goes triple if you do plan to let your pooch run free. You don’t want him racing off into the woods after a squirrel!

Fire

It’s only natural to want your furry buddy to hang out at the fire with you. Just don’t let Fido get too close to the flames. You’ll also need to be careful in the morning. Your pet could accidentally walk over hot coals and burn his paws.

Waste

Don’t mar a beautiful campsite by leaving a mess behind. Pick up after your pooch! In some cases, you may be able to bury your pup’s waste, though you’ll need to check local regulations first.
