Pool Safety for Dogs

July 1, 2021

Are you planning to spend a lot of time at the pool this summer? If so, your canine friend may want to join you. Fido enjoys outdoor fun as much as we do. However, you’ll need to take care to keep him safe. Pools can be very dangerous for dogs! An Anderson, IN vet discusses pool safety for dogs below.

Supervision

First and foremost, never leave Fido unattended near the pool, or any other body of water. Dogs are in over their heads in very shallow water, and even pups that can swim well can panic if they don’t know how to get out.

Swimming Lessons

Some dogs are natural swimmers, but this isn’t always the case. If Fido doesn’t know how to swim, take time to teach him. Start in shallow water, and support him as he is learning.

Gate

Follow the same general safety precautions as you would with a toddler. Be sure to keep the pool gated off when it isn’t in use. You don’t have to dig holes in your yard to do this: look for a portable no-dig fence.

This Way Out

One of the first things you’ll need to do is show your canine pal where the exit is. Take some time with this. You want to make sure that Fido will really remember!

Paw Care

Dogs’ paws are very delicate when they’re wet. Fido could very quickly get painful blisters and abrasions by running around on tar or cement after going swimming. Keep him on soft ground after he gets out of the water.

Doggy Stairs

You may want to get some doggy stairs, especially if you have an above-ground pool and/or if Fido has a hard time getting out. Better safe than sorry!

Pool Covers

Pool covers are another concern. Fido may think that it’s a solid surface, and could try to walk on it. Your pet would be in serious—and potentially life-threatening—danger if the cover collapses!

Lighting

Take extra care after dark. you may want to put motion lights up, to ensure your pooch doesn’t accidentally fall in.

Water

Fido can get very thirsty running and playing on hot days. Make sure there is always fresh water out for him. You definitely don’t want him drinking chlorine or other pool chemicals!
