Border Collies

November 15, 2021

November 24th is Border Collie Day! These cute pups definitely deserve their own day. They’re not only super smart and affectionate, they make wonderful pets. An Anderson, IN vet discusses these very good boys below.

Basics

If we had to name just one exemplary trait Border Collies have, it would likely be their intelligence. Border Collies consistently rank at or near the top of the list of most intelligent dogs, usually claiming that number one spot. One of them, Chaser, was able to identify a whopping 1000 different products by name. That’s one smart pooch!

Dog With A Job

Border Collies are part of the AKC’s Herding Group. They were originally bred to herd sheep, and are very, very good at it. In fact, in one trial, a Border Collie got a herd of sheep into a pen, while being directed just by whistles and hand signals. Like many herding dogs, these pups are doggy superstars at many things, including agility and obedience training.

Care

Border Collies typically live between 12 to 15 years, but they can live as long as 18 with proper care. Like any other pup, they need good food, regular activity, and proper veterinary care to thrive. As you may know, many dog breeds are prone to specific health conditions. Fido is no exception. Hip dysplasia, epilepsy, and Collie eye anomaly are some of the ones we often see in these cute pups.

You may notice that Fido tries to ‘herd’ your family, perhaps by nipping at their heels. That isn’t aggression: it’s herding instinct. The good news is that these dogs are very trainable, so you can teach your canine buddy better manners. Another key to good Border Collie care? Don’t let Fido get bored. You may come home to find that your furry little genius has eaten your sofa, taught the cat how to play chess, or dug a hole in your carpet.

History

Border Collies’ history actually shows in their name. Fido was first born somewhere in the region around the English and Scottish borders. He’s had several careers, but one of his most recent jobs is that of goose master. Geese have become such a nuisance in some parts of Florida that Border Collies are being trained specifically to chase them off.
